Pizza is a baked pie consisting of a shallow breadlike crust covered with seasoned tomato sauce, cheese, and often other toppings,
such as sausage or olives. Now you know.
This might be fighting talk, but the Italians did not invent pizza, however they did raise it to the present level of perfection
and sell it to the world.
Pizza had two parents, the Greeks who occupied the south of Italy before the founding of Rome. The Greeks baked round,
flat breads and garnished them with oils, garlic, vegetables and other foods, leaving a rim of crust to serve as a handle. This was the days before
forks.
After the fall of Rome the Goths, who spoke a Germanic language, occupied the North of Italy. The word Pizza is
thought to derive from bizzo or pizzo, a word related to English bite and bit. This word originally meant
mouthful, what you obtain by biting. Later it came to mean a piece of bread. |
